HONG KONG/NEW YORK, Oct 28 (Reuters) - China-focused Internet media firm
Sina Corp (NasdaqNM:SINA - News) posted on Tuesday a record quarterly profit
and predicted strong revenue growth would continue next year as it raised
its advertising rates up to 30 percent.


Shanghai-based Sina reported third-quarter net earnings of US$11.7 million,
or 21 cents a diluted share, versus a loss of about US$600,000, or one cent
per share, a year earlier.

Quarterly revenue soared three times to US$31.9 million, also a record,
compared with US$10.4 million a year before.

Both the profit and revenue figures were ahead of guidance that Sina issued
in July, as the company's advertising and mobile phone services businesses
continued to boom.

Once written off for dead, Sina and its two chief rivals, Sohu.com
(NasdaqNM:SOHU - News) and NetEase.com (NasdaqNM:NTES - News), have risen
from the ashes of the Internet bust to turn their first profits over the
last year and become some of the best performers on the U.S. tech-driven
Nasdaq index (NasdaqSC:^IXIC - News).

Sina, NetEase and Sohu all operate Web sites that, among other things, allow
subscribers to send text messages to mobile phone users throughout China.
Such messaging functions are among their most popular services.

Sina shares have rocketed 1,667 percent over the past year. They added
another 3.4 percent to close at US$43.42 on Monday before the results were
announced.

The company said its advertising revenues rose 76 percent from the
year-earlier period to $11.4 million on growing demand for online ads in
China's media market.

Strength in advertising prompted Sina to raise ad rates 20-30 percent for
its prime channel advertisers effective in January, after keeping prices
virtually unchanged for all of this year, said Chief Operating Officer
Charles Chao.

"We do not see the change in terms of demand for our prime channels" in
response to the rate hike, he said.

Non-advertising revenues, which include sales of short message services and
mobile phone ring tones, totalled $20.5 million for the quarter, up 431
percent from a year earlier.

Chang-hua Qiu of New Jersey-based Forun Technologies, one of only two U.S.
financial analysts who follow the stock, said the results suggest that Sina
was gaining market share in the explosively growing mobile text-messaging
business in China compared with rival Sohu.com.

"China is a big market with room for multiple players to grow fast," said
Qiu, who continues to rate Sina an "outperform" relative to other Nasdaq
stocks despite its recent gains.

The value of China's text market last year was an estimated US$234 million,
and is forecast to grow to about US$750 million this year. Chinese mobile
phone users sent around 80 billion text messages in 2002 and are expected to
send 120 billion this year.

Sina said it expected fourth-quarter revenues of between $35.2 million and
$36.2 million.

Excluding the effect of any potential realised loss from its investment in
slumping Sun Media Group (HKSE:0307.HK - News), Sina said it expected
fourth-quarter diluted earnings per share of 24 cents to 25 cents with an
effective tax rate of about five percent.

Chao acknowledged that the hefty revenue growth of recent quarters would be
difficult to sustain over the long term as the company's revenue base gets
bigger.

Chao said the company would consider acquisition opportunities, but is not
feeling pressure to move quickly on that front.

Magari con il calo che han portato gli earnings di Ntes
potrebbe diventare appetibile...
Tanto da permetterli il sorpasso rispetto a Ntes
