Crystallex trade halted on accounting concerns
Wed July 9, 2003 09:39 AM ET
TORONTO, July 9 (Reuters) - British Columbia's Securities Commission slapped
a cease trade order on Crystallex International KRY.TO on Wednesday because
of issues regarding the miner's financial statements, the commission said.
The commission said Crystallex's year-end statement for 2002, which included
restated figures for 2000 and 2001, did not meet generally accepted
accounting principles.
It said Crystallex found accounting errors during a review of its hedge book
over the past three years.
The executive director has ordered Crystallex shares to stop trading until
the company files amended financial statements for the years in question.
Shares of Crystallex, halted prior to the news, closed at C$2.09 on the
Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday.
The Toronto Stock Exchange said it extended its review of Crystallex and its
eligibility for listing until July 16.
Key executives on the move in Crystallex Las Cristinas developments?
Speculation is growing that Las Cristinas gold mine operator Crystallex
International Corporation (KRY) is about to appoint a new executive officer
at its Toronto HQ with a key director either leaving for pastures new or
moving laterally within the company's new structure as it enters the final
phase to kick-start what is seen as South America's largest proven gold
reserve.
Canadian investors appear to think that, taking advantage of tomorrow's USA
July 4 Independence Day market close in New York, an announcement will come
just after the Canadian markets close Friday ... or prior to Monday's
opening bell.
Indications are being drawn from a June 30 position taken by at least one
other North American gold mining company to acquire 4.9% of Crystallex stock
with further purchases before its regulatory US required deadline for filing
10 days after the 4.9% is reached.
Crystallex must also meet a July 9 deadline to comply with Toronto Stock
Exchange listing requirements and eyes are now focused on July 10 as a
probable date on which the Venezuelan Guayana Corporation (CVG) will make a
key announcement when its president, Major General (ret.) Francisco Rangel
Gomez is scheduled to visit Miami before a further visit to Washington D.C.
Market speculators on both sides of the Canadian border have been
speculating for weeks on the possibility of a "buy out" or a "buy" in option
for a joint venture with possible suitors oscillating between Toronto-based
Barrick (ABX) and late-comer Idaho-based Hecla, which already has operations
underway close to Crystallex' focus of operations at El Callao in
southeastern Bolivar State.
Crystallex International executives are meanwhile doing an excellent job of
emulating a hijack by extraterrestrials in an abject refusal to return
telephone calls, probably as a result of having signed confidentiality
agreements with eventual suitors ... and with a Las Cristinas feasibility
study due for release as early as next month.
Whichever way, CVG officials in Puerto Ordaz will already have had resource
advisories complementing those historically done by Placer Dome (PDG) ...
the Venezuelan government is known to be straining at the leash for
Crystallex to get operative on an (unofficially) estimated 22 million ounce
gold reserve and pouring gold bullion into the Central Bank of Venezuela
(BCV) at the earliest possible moment as per contract.
Crystallex's primary international backers, German Deutsche Bank officials
are already talking with the CVG on a series of other regional investments
in the Guayana region of Venezuela and late-breaking news, Thursday, seems
to add to speculation that the Crystallex executive on the move is current
president & CEO Marc J. Oppenheimer ... it is believed that he will
relinquish the CEO role to have a more hands-on executive role over Las
Cristinas and a series of upcoming Venezuelan operations in liaison with top
CVG executives, leaving his replacement to take over the multi-national helm
at Toronto HQ in parallel with chairman Robert Fung.
